If Blogging is Outlawed, Then Only Outlaws Shall Have Blogs

Written 30 July 2007 by Graham Wright

What the hell, people? Why are there so many of you out there?

Okay, theres probably not that many people reading this right now (which is probably a good thing), but we’ve been playing some shows the past few days and I’ve noticed a lot of people. A frightening amount, in fact.

Exhibit A: We flew into Edmonton last night to play a local festival, where some misguided person, in a moment of insanity, invited us to headline the main stage on Sunday night. Other bands that had done this: Weird Al, and a bunch of others I can’t remember now. But seriously, Weird Al played on Wednesday and then, a scant four days later, we were there. And the weirdest part about it? People came. People that seemed to know our songs, and like them. Unfortunatley I was using mostly unfamiliar rental gear, so for me the show was an unmitigated disaster from start to finish, but I couldn’t help but get a rush out of the whole thing. How can you not?

Exhibit B: Today we flew from Edmonton to Calgary to Houston to Austin (memo: book direct flights next time), and arrived to play in wonderful Austin, a city in which we’ve had nothing but good experiences before. Running on a grand total of five or six hours sleep in the past two days, the show should probably have been a disaster. But it wasn’t. Somehow we managed to find some energy somewhere, and played the sweatiest show ever. And again, a really big crowd. Where did all these people come from? They really seem to genuinely like us, which never ceases to shock me. Because thats what I do. Going to concerts, waiting in line, watching the band and shouting like a crazy person, these are all things that I’ve done many times, and will continue to do for as long as my hearing holds out. The idea that people are doing so for us is mind-boggling (or mind _blogg_oling) to say the least.

So thanks, everyone. I really can’t say how much it means to me, to all of us, to have people like you shout manically at us while we play. Keep it up forever, won’t you?

  1. Of course people came, you guys kick ass!

So much so in fact that if you guys came down to Melbourne in Australia (I’ll keep dreaming) I’ll not only scream at the show, I’ll wait at the airport for however long it takes and scream at you when you get off the plane.

... or maybe not. (Maybe a simple hello if I got the chance would be more pleasant for everyone). :)

  2. Of course people came! You put on a great live show, and the energy you guys had was contagious to everyone there. I was up front at Edfest and was blown away! No one could tell that your equipment wasn’t working so I wouldn’t worry about it. It was just awesome to have you guys come at all.
Also, thank you for treating your fans so well, and taking the time to speak with everyone and take pictures. I must say that Gregs Scottish accent is something to be reckoned with! Hahaha.

  8. As long as there is Tokyo Police Club, I’ll never stop shouting. : )
Do unto others, man…The favor you did for my sister and me in Scottsdale…I don’t think I was able to fully express my gratitude then, so, from both of us, THANK YOU! a thousand times over! And thank Kim for us, too, just as many times. : )

  11. I think that the whole Indie community, at least the ones who have heard of you, view you as this band with unlimited potential, and I think they are right. I haven’t heard dancy/garage punk with a dash of sci-fi in a long time. I wish you guys would come to the Southgate in Newport, Kentucky. It is a little charming rustic mansion, just ask Cursive all about it. The Southgate house is worth a visit.

  12. may i say that you are incredibly humble.

but the thing is, if you come play a show in Newmarket (hint hint) then you’ll have the biggest crowd yet. and if not the biggest, then the most enthusiastic. i promise.

soooo are you going to come play a show soon? =D
