Its That Time Again - Studio Diary!
Written 18 September 2007 by Graham Wright
I’m getting confused by all the different places I keep waking up. First, its the studio instead of my bed. Then, when I’m just getting used to that, its a hotel in New York. Very confusing. But we did have a lovely weekend in the city (hey, maybe we should name our album after it!). But its back to work today.
We spent the day working on the increasingly inaccuratley titled New Song, now easily one of the oldest songs in our repertoire. It was going smoothly until we realized that everyone has different ideas for the song. We’ve never had time before to really discuss things, we’ve just had to do what we already have. In this session, we decided the quickest and most democratic way to work would be to record everyones ideas and sort through them later, instead of discussing them while we should be tracking. Sometimes, it really does make things go smoothly. Today it lead to a clusterfuck of quitar and keyboard tracks, with nothing decided at all. Sometimes I miss being forced to work quickly. But we’ll work through it, we always do.
I played a cool thing called an Optigan today, and will likely continue to do so at every available opportunity. I love weird and old sounding instruments, and this one qualifies.
